Helpful Tips for Writing Pilgrimage of Discovery Application Essays
The Pilgrimage of Discovery (POD) is a unique opportunity to experience the historical and spiritual beauty of our Orthodox Christian faith in Constantinople and to visit our Ecumenical Patriarchate. The POD Selection Committee is honored that you have considered this program to be worthy of your time and personal reflection. We review many applications each year, and there are certain characteristics that make some applications more competitive than others. Your essays play a central role in presenting who you are, what you value, and where you are in your faith journey. They also show your leadership and volunteerism in the Orthodox Church. The strongest essays demonstrate organization, insight, thoughtfulness, clarity, and sincerity. These factors are considered when selecting the next cohort of POD young adults. We hope the following suggestions assist you in constructing more competitive responses that better reflect your thoughts, work, leadership, faith, abilities, and intentions.
-
Answer the Question Directly
-
Each question on the application is asked for a specific reason and is designed to learn something specific about you. Before writing, read each question carefully and make sure you understand exactly what is being asked. Take time to reflect on the question and consider how it connects to you. Your essays should clearly address every part of the question. Avoid giving vague or general statements that do not connect back to the question. A strong essay shows the POD Selection Committee that you have reflected on the question, have considered how this topic applies to you and to the program, and that you can think critically and respond with purpose. You are permitted to research a topic, but do not have artificial intelligence (AI) write your essays as this will result in negative consequences for your application. When editing, ask yourself whether the question has been answered completely and in a way that provides insight about you.

Provide Detailed, Thorough Responses
-
Strong essays show depth. Take time to reflect deeply and share meaningful information about your experiences, faith, work, volunteerism, leadership, life, motivations, and perspectives. A detailed response shows that you have invested thought into your application and that you take this opportunity seriously. Take the time to expand on your ideas so the POD Selection Committee gains a deep understanding of you and why you are an excellent choice for the POD. Describe your thoughts clearly, explain your reasoning, share why a topic matters to you, and avoid incomplete answers. A detailed response shows care, reflection, and maturity.

-
Use Examples from Your Life
-
Strong essays are grounded in real and personal experiences. Support your answers with examples such as experiences, moments, or responsibilities that reveal who you are. If discussing your faith, leadership, challenges, or motivations, make sure to connect these to concrete examples from your life. Tell a story, describe a moment of challenge or discovery, explain a situation that shaped you, or share an event or person who was instrumental in your development. Real-life examples help your application stand out and demonstrate authenticity.

-
Be Organized and Elaborate on Your Thoughts
-
Essays should be well-organized, easy to read, and they should answer each part of the question. Use complete sentences, good grammar, organized paragraphs, and clear language. Make it easy for the POD Selection Committee to understand your answer by providing details and explaining each part of your answer. If you write about an experience, describe what happened. If you mention an influential person, describe how they impacted you. Share what you learned and how this affected your spiritual life, personal growth, or connection to the Church. If you discuss your interest in the Ecumenical Patriarchate or Church history, explain how that interest developed and how the POD aligns with your goals. If you reference your work, mention how it may contribute and challenge your faith and life. Thoughtful elaboration shows maturity, reflection, and clarity of purpose that will help the POD Selection Committee understand the significance of your experiences, motivations, and the depth of your commitment to your faith, your community, and to the POD.
